List of Characters
Junie Beatrice (Junie B.) Jones
is the series' title character, or main protagonist. She lives with her parents, Robert and Susan Jones, and her baby brother Ollie. In kindergarten, her two best friends are Lucille, a rich and somewhat spoiled little girl with a very rich nanna, and Grace, an athletic African-American girl who likes to wear pink high-top shoes. And in first grade, her best friends are Herb, Jose, and Lennie. Junie B. has two rivals throughout the series, a boy named Jim in kindergarten and a girl named May in first grade. In kindergarten, her classroom is Room Nine, and in First Grade, Room One. Junie B.'s favorite foods are spaghetti and meatballs, lemon pie, and ice cream. She has many catchphrases, such as "Wowie wow wow!", "Yeah, only," and "Wait till you hear this!". She is afraid of roosters because she thinks "they can peck your head into a nub", ponies because she thinks "they can stomple you to the ground and kill you," and clowns because she thinks "they are not normal people."
Robert (Bob, Ace) Jones
is Junie B. and Ollie's lovable father, whom Junie B. calls "Daddy." He takes Junie B. to the beauty shop with him (and of course his daughter causes disaster) in
Junie B. Jones is a Beauty Shop Guy.
In
Junie B. First Grader, One Man Band,
he teaches Junie B. to juggle, but she actually starts juggling at the very end, when she juggles biscuits. Robert is said to be playful and silly around his daughter.
Susan Jones
is Junie B. and Ollie's protective mother, whom Junie B. calls "Mother." Since Junie B. loves ice cream, Susan made a rule at the grocery store that Junie B. can't shout "I WANT ICE CREAM!" It's possible that Susan's maiden name was Susan Miller, and that Frank and Helen Miller are Susan's parents. She is shown to have short blonde hair and wears make-up.
Ollie Jones
is Junie B.'s baby brother. He is born in
Junie B. Jones and the Little Monkey Business
. In
Junie B. First Grader, BOO! And I Mean It
, he is said to be ten months old, so he is probably born in December. Junie B. thinks he's dumb, since the two may be in sibling rivalry. Junie B. does seem to like him sometimes, like in
Junie B First Grader, Toothless Wonder
Junie B. realizes that Ollie's first tooth was the tooth Junie B. lost, and she smiles at Ollie.
Frank Miller
is Junie B.'s grandfather, or as she calls him, Grandpa Miller. Grandpa Miller, along with his wife, Helen Miller, babysits for her and her brother while their parents are at work. Grandpa Miller is Junie B's "favoritest babysitter cause he doesn't even follow the 'structions!"
Helen Miller
is Junie B.'s grandmother, Grandma Miller. Grandma Miller also sits for Junie B and her brother at times. Junie B.'s catch phrase with Helen is "Grandma patted me and said don't call her Helen."
Friends, Rivals, and Teachers of Junie B.
Friends:
Lucille
is Junie B.'s rich and somewhat spoiled best friend in kindergarten. She has a nanna who pampers her and always gives her what she wants. Lucille is in Junie B.'s first grade class too, and she
deserts Junie B. in the beginning of the first grade adventures and becomes friends with
African-American twins named Camille and Chenille. Junie B. says that she doesn't like Lucille very much in the first grade adventures.
Grace
is Junie B.'s athletic, African-American best friend in kindergarten. Like Junie B., she has a baby brother. Grace is a very fast runner and wears pink high-top sneakers. She sits with Junie B. every day on the school bus in kindergarten. In first grade she makes a new friend named Bobbi Jean Piper, and Bobbi Jean Piper and Junie B. have sudden hatred of each other. Junie B. says she likes Grace better than Lucille.
Herbert (Herb)
is Junie B.'s best friend in first grade. He seems to dislike May as much as Junie B. does. In
Junie B. Top Secret Personal Beeswax
, Junie B. says she has a crush on Herb.
Jose
is another one of Junie B.'s best friends in first grade. He speaks Spanish. Sometimes he greets Junie B. in Spanish. Won the bouquet of flowers for his mother in
Junie B. First Grader, Dumb Bunny
.
Lennie
is another one of Junie B.'s best friends in first grade. He is quiet and almost always agrees with Junie B., Herb, and Jose.
Sheldon Potts
is a good friend of Junie B. in first grade. He is the only other character whose last name is known besides Junie B., her family, and Paulie Allen Puffer. Sheldon is known for showing his bare feet in class when taking off his shoes and socks. He can be awfully shy in front of a crowd as revealed in
Junie B. First Grader, One Man Band
. In
Junie B. First Grader, Dumb Bunny
, he and Lucille are shown to have a crush on each other.
Shirley
is another good friend of Junie B. in first grade. Not much is known about her, but sometimes she and Junie B. chat a little.
Rivals:
Jim
is Junie B.'s kindergarten rival. But in
Junie B. Jones and the Mushy Gushy Valentine
, he says he has a crush on
Junie B. and they become friends.
May
is Junie B.'s first grade rival and current rival. She sits beside Junie B. in the back of the classroom in the first grade adventures. The only time they are ever nice to each other is at the end of
Junie B. First Grader, Jingle Bells, Batman Smells, (P.S. So does May)
.
Bobbi Jean Piper
only appears briefly in
Junie B. First Grader, (At Last)
. Not much is known about her, but she's shown as Grace's new friend.
Teachers:
Mrs.
is Junie B.'s kindergarten teacher, and head of Room Nine. In all of the kindergarten adventures, Junie B. says: "It was my teacher. Her name is Mrs. She has another name too but I just like Mrs. and that's all." This is implying that Junie B. does not remember her last name.
Mr. Scary
is Junie B.'s first grade teacher and current teacher. He makes his class keep journals and the students write whatever they want in them. Mr. Scary often acts as a peacemaker when Junie B. and May fight. He can also be very firm when Junie B. and May tattle on each other.
Controversy among parents
Junie B.'s speech has raised controversy among parents.
Barbara Park was sixth on the
American Library Assosation's 2004 most frequently challenged authors.
[1] Like many children, Junie B. mispronounces words (e.g. "pasketti" instead of "
spaghetti", “bestest” instead of “best”, "valentime" instead of "
valentine", “splode” instead of “explode”, “Little Miss Muppet Who Sat on her Trumpet” instead of “
Little Miss Muffet Who Sat on her Tuffet”, "The Wizard of Odds" instead of
The Wizard of Oz
, “Cattle Act” instead of “
Cadillac” and other mispronounced phrases) and conjugates words incorrectly (e.g. “stoled” instead of "stole", “stucked” instead of "stuck", “throwed” instead of "threw", “runned” instead of "ran").
Junie B. also uses shortened words such as "'magination" (Imagination), "Greedients" (Ingredients), "Pology" (Apology), "Structions" (Instructions), "Nouncement" (Announcement), "Mergency" (Emergency), "Rolled" (Enrolled), "Freshments" (Refreshments), "Cause" (Because), "Portant" (Important), "Tract" (Attract), "Tention" (Attention), "Bout" (About) & "Fridgerator" (Refrigerator)
She also sometimes leaves out the "g" at the end of words (e.g. "shinin'" instead of “shining”, "goin" instead of "going") and she inserts a “y” or “ie” into many words, such as “baldie” (
bald), “meanie” (mean), and “beanies” (
beans). Junie B. also makes up terms like “zooming” for running and “springing” for jumping.
Some parents avoid these books because they would rather not expose their children to bad English while others view it as an opportunity to teach proper grammar. Parents also censor the books in their homes because of Junie B.'s behavior: talking back to teachers and being childishly rude. Overall, however, the parental response is positive, and the Junie B. Jones books continue to be bestsellers.
