Broadway to Hollywood
was an early American television program broadcast on the now-defunct DuMont Television Network. The popular series began on July 4, 1949 and became one of the longest-running series on DuMont. It was a talk show originally hosted by Don Russell and filled with news, celebrity gossip, and home-viewer quizzes. It was originally titled Headline Clues
. [1]
The quiz portion of the program proved popular enough that it was spun off into a nighttime version on July 20, 1949 with host George Putnam. The nighttime version adopted Broadway to Hollywood
onto its title beginning with the October 21, 1949 show while the daytime series remained as Headline Clues
.
Russell stayed with the daytime show until its end on May 4, 1951. Putnam left the nighttime series in February 1951, after which Bill Slater took over until 1953. Conrad Nagel hosted for the final season, and the series ended on July 15, 1954.
