Team history
The Alaska Wild was organized May 6, 2006 to become Alaska's first professional football team. The name "Alaska Wild" was chosen from over 1,500 names submitted online on the team's website. They were originally intended to join the
af2, yet on October 3, 2006, it was announced that due to financial concerns, the team would suspend operations until the 2008 season. However, the team later withdrew that statement and announced they would play the 2007 season in the
Intense Football League.
The Alaska Wild made history on
July 5th,
2007 by winning their first ever football game in team history. Perhaps on a larger scale, it was the first ever professional football victory in the history of the state of
Alaska. The Wild defeated the defending IFL champions,
Odessa Roughnecks, 62-47. The Wild were lead to victory by Head Coach Hans Deemer.
In 2008, the Wild have broken numerous league records. Demarcus James has broken the league interception record standing currently at 13. The Wild's roller coaster run has ended, as former owner Dave Weatherholt sold the team to local surgeon Randy "Doc" Deeter. Weatherholt's ownership had seen lots of turmoil. He was finally forced to sell the team by the league after he fired Deemer in May 2008. This caused the players to threaten a walkout unless new ownership was brought in. The team was sold days later. Floyd Johnson was named head coach in February 2009 after Deemer resigned. Their most notable rival is the
Fairbanks Grizzlies, who play in
Fairbanks,
Alaska.

Coaching changes
On April 13, 2007, the Alaska Wild fired coach Keith Evans just hours following the franchise's inaugural game. It marked another turn in the tumultuous path of the Alaska Wild, an expansion team in the Texas-based Intense Football League. The team was unable to agree on contract terms with coach Haywood Hill in January 2007 after prematurely announcing him as head coach the previous month. After Evans termination, Randy Magner was asked to take over head coaching duties, only to resign from the team entirely on April 16. On April 17, Hans Deemer was named head coach; Deemer had been the defensive line coach for the Wild. Deemer resigned in February of 2009. Floyd Johnson was named head coach and fired after starting 0-8. Sonny Rodriguez is now the Wild head coach.
