Robert J. Froehlich,
better known as "Dr. Bob," 56, is the retired Vice Chairman of Deutsche Asset Management, which is the money management arm of Deutsche Bank. He also served as Chairman of the Investor Strategy Committee. This committee was the first of its kind on Wall Street, providing a link between investment trends, investment strategies and, ultimately, to investment products for the individual investor.
Froehlich was responsible for providing portfolio managers, research analysts and product specialists around the globe with timely analysis of global investment trends and developments and what their impact may be on financial markets. Froehlich also served as the firm's chief investment spokesman. As such, one of his primary responsibilities was to articulate the firm's current market views in a thematic context, thus translating those themes as actionable investment ideas and strategies for clients, advisors, media and the general public.

Because of his high-profile role, Froehlich has had two national advertising campaigns revolve around him. The first national ad campaign for Kemper Funds -- "Dr. Bob Says" -- was launched in March, 2000. Because of the great success of that campaign, in May 2001, Scudder then launched a second national ad campaign called "Where's Dr. Bob?" Froehlich also has the unique distinction of being the only "Wall Street" strategist who has been invited to both open and close the markets for the
NASDAQ (April 15, 2002) and the
New York Stock Exchange (April 17, 2003).
Media Darling
As Deutsche Asset Management’s leading spokesperson on major investment matters, Froehlich evolved into the mutual fund industry's most mediagenic investment professional representing DWS Investments, the global mutual fund brand of Deutsche Asset Management. He still appears regularly on a variety of financial television programs on
CNBC,
CNN,
FOX News and
Bloomberg TV as well as other domestic and international financial networks. Froehlich is one of the regular guest co-hosts for CNBC's highest rated program "Squawk Box" and a guest co-host for
CNBC Europe's "Squawk Box" based in London and CNBC Asia’s “Squawk Box” based in Singapore. He was the first and remains the only person to ever be a "Squawk Box" guest host in all three locations; Singapore, London and New York. In addition to "Squawk Box," Froehlich has the distinction of having appeared as a guest on every CNBC program. He was also selected as one of the original regular guest financial commentators when CNN launched its new network, CNNfn in December, 1995. At FOX News Froehlich has become one of the regular “special guests” on their highest rated weekend show, “
Bulls and Bears.” In October 2007 when Fox launched its new business network,
Fox Business, it too called on Froehlich to help launch the new network by appearing as a guest on the very first day. Froehlich has been interviewed on some of the industry's most prestigious investment programs, including "Wall Street Week With Louis Rukeyser," "Money Line" with Lou Dobbs, "The MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour" and "World Business" with
Alexander Haig. The
Chicago Tribune wrote this about Dr. Bob . . . “The error-prone strategists and economists make the mistake of believing that the future will unfold just like the past. There are others, however, who have eyes to see the dust in the distance, ears to hear the hoof-beats of the thundering herd, and noses to smell the money to be made. One of those is Dr. Bob.”
Among the topics on which Froehlich is considered an expert are US and global economics, global currency and financial markets, public policy and politics and US and global demographic trends. That expertise has lead him to author four investment books.
Prolific Writer
His latest investment book, A
Bull for All Seasons
published by
McGraw Hill (September, 2008) is a compilation of Dr. Bob’s most prescient commentaries from the past decade, in which he explains the issues and events that drove his investment choices. As pertinent now as when they were written, these commentaries have stood the test of time and prove that there is always a bull market somewhere in the world.
In his third investment book,
Investment Megatrends
, published by
John Wiley & Sons (January, 2006); Dr. Bob maps the pitfalls and opportunities of demographic data, including what to look for and where. He identifies four prominent global shifts and investment strategies that could benefit from those shifts, based in part on his experience traveling the world and seeing these shifts for himself. It has since been translated into Korean by Gimm-Young Publishers and translated into Chinese by Cite Publishing, Ltd. His second investment book,
Where The Money I$
, published by John Wiley & Sons (July 2001), identifies the dominant global investment trends and themes for the decade ahead and explains how his newest investment discovery, which he has dubbed "Sectornomics,TM" will change investment strategy forever. This book reached the #1 best-seller on Amazon.com for investment books (August 29, 2001) and has since been translated into Korean by ChungRim Publishing, Orthodox Chinese by Wealth Press of the Republic of China and Simplified Chinese by the China Machine Press of The People's Republic of China. In his first book,
The Three Bears Are Dead!
published by
Forbes (April 1998), Froehlich explored the investment impact of low inflation, falling interest rates and declining government spending around the globe.
The media continually seeks Froehlich's analysis and opinions, and he is widely quoted in
The Wall Street Journal,
The New York Times and
Barron's. His timely and insightful investment commentary interpreting current events driving the markets has gained Froehlich acclaim within the brokerage community as one of the most important investment strategists of our day. Financial advisors and investors alike look to Froehlich to be in the forefront, explaining major investment events and issues around the globe as they happen. In addition to his speaking and writing, Froehlich has never lost his passion for research. He has met personally with the CEO's of hundreds of companies as well as political leaders from all around the globe. His perspective regarding what's on the mind of global business and political leaders today is unparalleled in the industry.
Both Public & Private Sector Experience
Froehlich has the rare distinction of a distinguished professional career combining experience in both the public and private sectors. This background allows him to develop his unique perspective by always seeing issues from both sides. Froehlich began his professional career in the public sector where he served as chief financial officer for a utility and as one of the youngest city managers ever in
Ohio. After his tenure in the political arena, which included the role of campaign finance chairman for
Paul R. Leonard, the 58th lieutenant governor of Ohio, Froehlich was a senior executive with
Ernst & Whinney providing economic, financial and investment consulting as well as expert testimony for its client base. Before joining Kemper Funds which became Scudder Funds and is now DWS Investments, he was with
Van Kampen Merritt where he served as director of research and was responsible for one of the largest research staffs in the mutual fund industry until his appointment as that firm's first chief investment strategist. While at Van Kampen, Froehlich was elected to three "All-American" Institutional Research Teams sponsored by Global Guarantee, The Bond Buyer and Ratings, Research and Review. He was also appointed to the Board of Directors of McCarthy, Crisanti and McAfee (MCM), one of the world's leading Institutional Investment and Economic research firms. Dr. Bob’s first job was working in the steel mills for
U.S. Steel in
Pittsburgh, PA in the summers while attending college.
Educational & Academic Service
Froehlich received his doctorate in public policy in 1979 from
California Coast University (formerly California Western University), a master's in management in 1978 from
Central Michigan University, a master's in public administration in 1976 and a bachelor's in history in 1975 from the
University of Dayton. He has remained actively involved with the University of Dayton, where he currently serves on the Board of Trustees and is a member of the Academic Affairs Committee and Executive Committee of the Board. In addition, he was a long standing member of the University's Investment Committee and currently serves as the Investment Committee Chairman . He has the distinction of being appointed the first Executive in Residence for the University's Center for Portfolio Management which is home to a multi-million dollar portfolio managed by students at the university. As one of its founders, Froehlich continues to play a key role as the forum moderator and program co-chair in the now annual R.I.S.E. (Redefining Investment Strategy Education) global student investment forum, which has evolved into the world’s largest student investment forum by attracting thousands of students from around the world to the campus of the University of Dayton. In 2000, his work with R.I.S.E led the School of Business to bestow upon Dr. Bob its prestigious Service Leadership Award. And in 2005 he was the first UD Alumni inducted into the R.I.S.E. "Hall of Fame." Froehlich continues to serve as a special guest lecturer for the School of Business. In addition to the University of Dayton, Froehlich has volunteered his time to speak on numerous college campuses across the United States regarding the future of Wall Street, the importance of corporate and social responsibility as well as leadership. His educational speaking highlights took place at the following venues: the campus of
Augustana College (Oct. 2002) while his eldest daughter Marianne was a student there; the campus of
Cornell College (April 2004) while his youngest daughter Stephanie was a student there; his high school alma mater,
North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he gave the keynote commencement address in May, 2003 and one of his graduate school alma mater’s,
Central Michigan University in
Mt. Pleasant,
Michigan, where he gave the keynote commencement address for the School of Business in May, 2008. At the conclusion of his commencement address, the Board of Trustees of Central Michigan University conferred upon Froehlich, an honorary Doctorate of Commercial Science degree.
R.I.S.E. Founder
One of Dr. Bob’s passions is R.I.S.E. Not only was he one of the founders, but he volunteers over 1,000 hours each year to R.I.S.E. by recruiting all of the keynote speakers, recruiting and retaining all of the strategic partners, as well as personally recruiting colleges and universities from around the world to attend R.I.S.E. each year. Dr. Bob’s vision for R.I.S.E. was to create a completely “interactive” forum between students, faculty, business & finance professionals and political leaders from around the world. The purpose of R.I.S.E. is to connect everyone in a unique learning environment. R.I.S.E. is fashioned after the industry’s most influential forum, the World Economic Forum held annually in
Davos,
Switzerland. Like Davos, no research papers are delivered or PowerPoint presentations are made at R.I.S.E. Instead, presenters sit informally on a stage with Dr. Bob who moderates every keynote panel. In this interactive setting students get to ask questions about everything from the outlook for the stock market to global trade barriers to corporate responsibility. This completely “interactive” forum connects classroom theory with real world practice as participants debate global investment issues just like they do in Davos. The difference is at R.I.S.E., the focus is on the students.
In its first nine years R.I.S.E. has yielded amazing results. Dr. Bob has recruited 100 different keynote speakers, which in turn have helped attract 11,450 participants representing 597 colleges and universities from 90 countries and all 50 states including
Washington, D.C. In addition, 315 different organizations have participated in R.I.S.E. by either providing speakers, panelists, moderators, judges, being strategic partners or connecting via satellite. Dr. Bob has also recruited and negotiated the involvement of 20 strategic partners from around the world for R.I.S.E. and the
