The history of the Rangers go back over three-quarters of a century. The New York Rangers play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference in the NHL. Founded in 1926, the team is one of the "Original Six" which refers to teams that were founded between 1918 and 1928. Originally, legendary hockey owner Conn Smythe was called in to assemble the team, but he was fired and paid $900,000 to leave and replaced by Lester Patrick. The players Smythe had assembled were kept and they were so good that they won the Stanley Cup in only their second year of existance.

After their third Stanley Cup win in 1940, the team fell apart, lending creedence to a theory that the team was cursed. Indeed, they would not win again until 1994. In 1994, when the team finally broke their 54-year slump, the rings that were made for the 1994 Stanley Cup Champions had "1940" engraved in them and a slash through the year, indicating that the curse had been broken.

The New York Rangers have played their entire history at Madison Square Garden, and the location of Madison Square Garden has only moved one time in the team's history -- in 1968, it was moved from 8th Avenue between 49th and 50th street to its current location, at 8th Avenue between 31st and 33rd Street, on top of Pennsylvania Station. Madison Square Garden is a gorgeous 18,200 seat arena, and is the oldest arena still in operation for any NHL team.
