New Jersey Devils History

The New Jersey Devils franchise got its start as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974 when the National Hockey League expanded to 20 teams. Due to poor attendance and financial problems, the team was sold to Jack Vickers in 1976. Vickers moved the team to Denver, and they became the Colorado Rockies. After six seasons in Colorado, the team moved to New Jersey in 1982 and were renamed the Devils.

The Devils continued to struggle for the first six years in New Jersey, not making the playoffs until 1988. The real success for the Devils began when Scott Stevens joined the team in 1991. Stevens was named captain in 1992, and led the Devils to Stanley Cup wins in 1995, 2000 and 2003. Although Stevens retired after the 2003 season, the Devils continue to enjoy success with players like Martin Brodeur, the goaltender who holds the NHL record for most career wins, and Zach Parise, a dynamic young player who consistently leads the Devils in goals scored.

In 2007, the Devils moved from the Continental Airlines arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey to the Prudential Center in Newark. Hockey fans agree that the new arena is a great place to watch a hockey game. The Prudential Center seats more than 17,600 fans for a hockey game, and is easily accessible by train for hockey lovers in northern New Jersey and New York City.
