Edmonton Oilers History

Though they went through a few name changes after being founded in 1972 as a part of the WHA league, the Edmonton Oilers were always a popular team with the fans in Alberta. During their time in the WHA, the Oilers established there good standing with the community by being one of the better teams to play in this league. They made one of the greatest trades in hockey history by landing Wayne Gretzky in 1978. The following year, they and three other teams were folded into the NHL.

Unlike most new teams to the NHL, the Oilers came out of the gate firing on all cylinders. With Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Grant Fuhr, this franchise was poised to make a dynasty run in the 1980's. They accomplished this task by winning five Stanley Cups between the 1983-84 and 1989-90 seasons. During this period of time, Gretzky established himself as the greatest Hockey player to ever live setting records for scoring, assists, and overall points scored in a season.

However, the Oilers decided to move Gretzky go to the Los Angeles Kings in the early 1990's and their dynasty fell apart. They would have to wait until after the turn of the millennium to once again make a serious run at the Stanley Cup. They returned to this plateau in 2006 when they won the Western Conference. However, they could not capture their sixth Cup falling short to the Carolina Hurricanes.
