Calgary Flames History

The franchise that became the Calgary Flames was actually founded in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. The hockey club would stay in Atlanta until moving to Calgary in 1980. The team was originally put in Atlanta as a way to balance out the schedule from the addition of the Islanders and to help block the growth of the upstart World Hockey Association. The Flames got their name from the Civil War occurrence when General William Tecumseh Sherman burned Georgia in his famous march to the sea. However, it seemed that the U.S. Southern region was not ready for hockey and the team was moved to the friendlier confines found in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Calgary had waited a long time for an NHL team to be based out of this city and the Flames were immediately taken in by the locals. Kent Nilsson and other players lead the Flames to the playoffs their first season in this city and would later aid them in winning the Western Conference in 1986. With the help of Lanny McDonald, Doug Risebrough, and Al MacInnis, the Flames won their first Stanley Cup in 1989.

Once the 1980's had passed, the Flames would take a back seat to other Western Division teams during the 1990's. However, the franchise would be reborn again by signing dynamo forward Jarome Iginla and goalie Miikka Kiprusuff. With these two core players, the Flames would go on to win their third Western Conference title in 2004. However, they fell short of getting their second Stanley Cup by losing the championship series to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
