Ice Hockey was reintroduced to the city of Atlanta in 1999 when the Thrashers were expanded to the league in this year. Since 1980, Atlanta had been void of an NHL team because their former franchise, the Flames, had upped and moved to Calgary. The Thrashers got their name from the city of Atlanta's original name Thrasherville and from Georgia's state bird, the Thrasher. However, the second coming of hockey to Atlanta would not produce championships for this new franchise.

Unfortunately for the Thrashers and Thrasher fans alike, the 1999 entry draft was not kind to this franchise. They drafted a player named Patrik Stefan who is now regarded as the worst first round pick in NHL history. Coupled with other draft flops in their inaugural season, the Thrashers would suffer losing seasons for their first five years of being in the league.

This would start to turn around in 2006-07 year as the Thrashers made it to the playoffs for the first time in team history. This was the same year that they won their first division title. Players like Steve Rucchin, Jon Sim, and Niko Kapanen aided the Thrashers to their most successful year to date. They entered the playoffs as the third seed but were swept out by the New York Rangers in the quarterfinals round.
