San Francisco 49ers History

1946 was the charter year for the San Francisco 49ers as a way for the returning veterans on the West Coast to enjoy professional football. However, it wasn't until 1950 that the 49ers were accepted into the National Football League. However, for the first 30 years of their existence, the 49ers only made the playoffs once and were a second tier team up until the 1970's. The early part of the 70's marked their greatest success to that point in franchise history, but the "Niners" fell back down the standings as the decade went on.

In 1978, the 49ers made their greatest move in hiring Bill Walsh, a head coach from Stanford University to run the team. Walsh was a proponent of the West Coast offense and brought this style of play to the 49ers. He built his team through the draft and by acquiring veteran free agents. Some of the notable draft picks that helped the 49ers later in the 1980's are Joe Montana, Dwight Clark, Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice, and Randy Cross.

During the Walsh-Montana era, the 49ers franchise would go on to become the dynasty of the 1980's, winning four Super Bowl championships in 1981, 1984, 1988, and 1989. These teams were lead by Montana and a staunch defense that stifled all opponents. However, due to missing two seasons with elbow troubles, the team turned to its next franchise quarterback in 1992, Steve Young, when Joe Montana was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Steve Young would also go one to be a Hall of Fame quarterback for the 49ers as he led his team to a Superbowl victory in 1994 against the San Diego Chargers. This gave the 49ers their fifth Super Bowl championship, making them the most winning football franchise at the time. They would later be overtaken by the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys would tie this record in 1995 but with 5 Super Bowl titles, the 49ers cemented their legacy in the NFL.
