In 1959, the town of Boston was awarded the 8th and final franchise when the AFL decided that their last football team would be located here. They started out in Boston without a stadium of their own and played their home games in Fenway Park and Harvard Field. However, they would eventually get their own home in Foxborough, 22 miles outside of Boston and were renamed the New England Patriots.

From the outset, the Patriots were a team that struggled out of the gate. They made it to the AFL championship game in 1963 but lost. They would have to wait until after the merger in 1970 before becoming relevant again. Once the merger occurred, the Pats, as they are known, were placed in the AFC East and remained their building up their strength until their eventual dynasty.

The Patriots lost in their first two Super Bowl appearances, one in 1985 and one in 1996. However, at the turn of the millennium, the Patriots organization hired guru offensive coordinator, Bill Belichick, as their head coach. Simultaneously, they drafted Tom Brady in the sixth round, who would later become one of the greatest quarterbacks in the league.

After 2000, the Patriots have established themselves as a modern day dynasty winning three Super Bowl titles in four tries. They almost became the second team in NFL history to go undefeated (including post season play) and would have been the first to go unblemished since the expanded sixteen game season was adopted. However, they would lose that Super Bowl in dramatic fashion to the New York Giants.
