Miami Dolphins History

Florida's longest running sports franchise was founded in 1966 as an expansion team to the AFL football league and are known as the Miami Dolphins. One of the greatest moves by original owner Joe Robbie was hiring Don Shula as the head coach for his team. Shula would go on to be the most winningest coach in NFL history as he stayed with the team for 26 years, winning two Super Bowls.

When the 1970's rolled around, the National Football League merged with the American Football League to form what we now know as the NFL. The Dolphins would only have to wait until 1972 when not only did they win their first Super Bowl, but they were the only NFL team to have a perfect season going completely undefeated. They were also the first AFC team to win two consecutive Super Bowls.

Under the tutelage of Don Shula, the Dolphins were always in the playoff hunt, but hit the jackpot when they drafted a young quarterback Dan Marino from the University of Pittsburgh in 1983. Marino would go on to be the NFL's most prolific passer as he set most of the NFL's quarterback stats records. However, he only ever got to the Super Bowl once and never won the big game.
