Kansas City Chiefs History

The Kansas City Chiefs were one of the original members of the American Football League when it was created in 1960. The Chiefs took to a new style of play that incorporated tough, agile defenses with a spread out, pass first offense. This was highly uncharacteristic of most NFL teams of the day but would serve as the bench mark team for all passing offenses.

Chiefs football was originally based in Texas as they were the Dallas Texans before being relocated to Kansas City in 1963. Owner Lamar Hunt chose legendary Head Coach Hank Stram from the University of Miami, which set the ball in motion for many championship runs. However, though they had many great teams, they would only win one title in 1969 at Super Bowl IV.

After the Stram era had ended, the Chiefs had great defenses but could never field a competitive offense. This changed when Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer took over control of the team in 1989. The Chiefs would go on to six straight playoff appearances but only managed to get to the AFC championship once. However, since the passing of Derrick Thomas and owner Lamar Hunt, the Chiefs have been amassing a solid core of players over the last decade.
