The Detroit Lions organization was founded as an independent football team attached to no league in Portsmouth, Ohio in 1929. However, due to the Great Depression, they would join the NFL while all other independent teams went out of business. In 1934, the Lions would play their first official Thanksgiving Day game, which is a NFL tradition that still goes on until this very day.

In the 1950's, the Lions had their greatest years as an organization winning three NFL championships. However, they would trade their star quarterback, Bobby Layne, at the end of the 1958 season who had said that the Lions would not win for the next 50 years. Turns out he was correct as the Lions have only won one playoff game since that time. However, this is not to suggest that there haven't been great players with this team.

No one could tell the history of the Lions without at least mentioning Barry Sanders. Barry Sanders is considered one of the greatest running backs of all time and played his entire career with the Lions after being drafted from Oklahoma State University. Since Sanders retired in 2000, the Lions have slowly been building a young and talented team for the future.
