The Jacksonville University basketball program was established in 1949.
Jacksonville has appeared in five NCAA Division I men's basketball tournaments, most recently in 1986. Their most memorable tournament was the first they participated in, the 1970 NCAA tournament. The Dolphins were able to get as far as the title game, losing to UCLA 80-69.
They are the first ever NCAA basketball program to average 100 points all season long. The Dolphins have won one Atlantic Sun regular-season title (2008-09), but have not yet won the conference tournament and the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as a member of the Atlantic Sun conference.
Some of the notable players in JU history are
Artis Gilmore, who led them to the 1970 NCAA title game and is the school's all-time leader in rebounds, blocks and field goals.
[1] Another historic player is
Rex Morgan who played with Gilmore in the 1970 title game against
UCLA. Morgan ranks as the all-time leader in career assists, second all-time at JU in career scoring average and fifth for free throws made.

Baseball
The Jacksonville Dolphins baseball team began play in 1957. The team was an independent until joining the
Sun Belt Conference in 1978. The Dolphins were affiliated with the Sun Belt conference until 1998, joining the
Atlantic Sun in 1999.
The Dolphins have participated in 13 NCAA tournaments beginning in 1968. The Dolphins participated in the 1968 College division tournament (which would eventually become Division II). Jacksonville's best showing in the NCAA tournament came in the
1976 South Regional. The Dolphins were one game away from the College World Series, but were eliminated by Aububurn 7-5. The Dolphins were part of the NCAA tournament in 1972, 1976, 1989, 1991, 1994, 1995,
1999,
2001,
2003,
2006, and
2007, and
2009.
Football
The Dolphins compete in the Pioneer Football League, a Division I football-only conference for institutions that do not offer football-based scholarships. Their first season of play was in 1998, and they have been members of the Pioneer Football League since 2001.
They play their home games at D.B. Milne Field, which has a listed capacity of 5000 spectators.
The Dolphins won the PFL conference title in 2008 (both Dayton and Jacksonville finished with 9-3 conference records, but Jacksonville won the head-to-head matchup on the last day of the regular season). The Dolphins represented the PFL in the 2008
Gridiron Classic, losing to
Albany, champions of the
Northeast Conference, 28-0 on December 6, 2009.
Lacrosse
Jacksonville will field both men's and women's NCAA Division I
lacrosse teams starting with the 2010 season. The men's team will not be affiliated with any conference, participating as a Division I independent.
[3]
JU will become the first Division I men's and women's programs in Florida to compete in an official game when the women's team takes on UMBC and the men's program battles powerhouse North Carolina on February 6, 2010. The double header action will become a hall mark of the programs as they grow into national-level programs over their first four seasons.
[4] [5]
JU's lacrosse programs were founded by current Director of Lacrosse Mindy McCord, who also serves as the program's head women's coach. Assisting Mindy McCord are Brooke Richards Magnusson, a former University of Maryland standout and Maryland prep player of the year, and Jen Heup, a Louisville Alumnus who earned Most Valuable Player in the 2009 IWLCA Senior North-South all-star game.
[6] [7] [8] [9]
The women's team will be a founding member of the National Lacrosse Conference. The eight-team conference includes southern-based universities JU, Davidson, High Point (2011), Presbyterian, Liberty, and Longwood as well as northern programs Detroit-Mercy and Howard. The conference will be a provisional conference for two years by NCAA standards, which means they will have to exist for two years in order to earn a potential automatic qualifier into the NCAA tournament.
[10]
The men's team will be the only Florida school to field a Division I lacrosse team. The current coach of the men's team is
Matt Kerwick, who was the head coach of the
Hobart men's lacrosse team from 2002-08..
[11]
The women's lacrosse team will not be the only Florida school to field a Division I team, as the
University of Florida also sponsors women's lacrosse. The two will square off in the University of Florida's first lacrosse game on February 20th, 2010.
