Washington Wizards History

The organization that eventually went on to become the Washington Wizards has gone through many facelifts, host cities and names over its tenure in the NBA. This team was founded as the Chicago Packers in 1961, and then changed their name to the Zephyrs the following year. After just two underachieving seasons, this team was moved to Baltimore and became the Bullets in 1963.

While in Baltimore, the Bullets built a sturdy team that would be in contention for the NBA crown each season as a result of the play from Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld. Both Monroe and Unseld would later be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1971, this team went to its first NBA Finals where they were swept by the Milwaukee Bucks. In 1974, the team would have its final relocation to Washington D.C where they play today. They would remain a dominant team during that decade, which culminated in their first and only NBA title being won in seven games against the Supersonics.

After that year, the Bullets were plagued by injuries and mismanagement spanning from 1980 to 1990's. The 90's were an especially tough decade for the team as the only major occurrence was yet another name change. In 1995, team owner Abe Pollin announced that the Bullets would be known as the Wizards. They have kept this moniker to this day and have been working to revitalize the franchise. Players like Gilbert Arenas and Antwan Jamison gave this franchise its pride back during the 2000's decade.
