Portland Trail Blazers History

The Portland Trail Blazers were an expansion team added to the Western Conference of the NBA in 1970. This franchise to date was and is the only major professional sports team to be based out of the state of Oregon. This aided them in selling out 815 straight games, which is still a professional sports record. The Blazers struggled, as most expansion teams do, right out of the gate, but their building period only took six seasons before they thrust themselves into the spotlight of the league.

It was in the 1976-1977 season that the Trail Blazers made their first appearance into the playoffs. They had a great team that was built around big man Bill Walton and Maurice Lucas. They won the Western Conference that year and made it to the NBA finals. In the finals, they downed the Philadelphia 76ers in six games to win this franchise's only NBA title.

After this championship season, Walton demanded a trade and later left as a free agent. This marked the end of what many predicted to be an Oregon dynasty for seasons to come. However, the Trail Blazers were a perennial playoff contender. It wouldn't be until the Clyde Drexler era that this team would make it back to the NBA finals but would fall short of the championship twice in 1990 and again in 1992. The post millennium Trail Blazers have been retooled with Ohio State big man, Greg Oden, and after a decade of mediocre play, they look to get back to their perennial playoff ways.
