Philadelphia 76ers History

While the 76ers are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA, they were originally based in Syracuse, New York and called the Nationals. They were an affiliate team of the NBL and merged to become an NBA team in 1949. During this franchises time as the Syracuse Nationals, they managed to win one NBA title in 1955. However, they would struggle in following seasons and be moved to Philadelphia in 1963.

Once in Philadelphia, this team took on a whole new image by acquiring Wilt "the Stilt" Chamberlain in 1964 from the other Philadelphia franchise at the time, the Warriors. Armed with Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, Wali Jones, and Lucious Jackson, the 76ers won their first NBA title for the city of Philadelphia in 1967 by beating the Warriors in six games. Chamberlain would stay on the team only one more season before being traded to the Lakers and the team went into a rebuilding phase following the 1968 season.

It was in 1976 that the Sixers acquired Julius Erving, or Dr. J as he is better known, from the New Jersey Nets. Erving would be the focal point of the resurgent Sixers squad along with Moses Malone and they would eventually lead them to their third NBA title in 1983. After the Dr. J era, the 76ers remained competitive but wouldn't make it back to the finals until the emergence of Allen Iverson. Iverson, a scrappy point guard from Georgetown, led his squad to the championship round in 2000, but the team was bested by the championship machine know as the Los Angeles Lakers.
