As part of a major four team expansion, the Minnesota Timberwolves were created in 1989 along with the Heat, Magic, and Hornets. Between 1989 and 1994, the Timberwolves were usually at the tail end of the Western Conference, which almost led them to be moved to New Orleans. When the Timberwolves drafted a high school player named Kevin Garnett with their first pick that season, they knew they were getting a perennial all-star. Under his stellar rookie season, the T-Wolves would make it to their first post season in franchise history in 1996. Even though they were swept in the first round that year, the Timberwolves established a new precedence for winning.

Between the years of 1995 and 2007, Kevin Garnett became the center piece of this franchise as they would be contenders in the Western Conference each year. However, role players like Lattrell Sprewell, Sam Cassel, and Wally Szczerbiak aided along the way in winning there only division title in 2004. In 2007, the T-Wolves went into a rebuilding phase that sent their star player to Boston.
