Memphis Grizzlies History

The Memphis Grizzlies were actually based out of Vancouver when they were founded as an expansion team along with another Canadian professional team, the Toronto Raptors, in 1995. They shared their original arena with the Vancouver Canucks at the General Motors Place. The Grizzlies won their first two games in their inaugural campaign but went on to post an NBA low record that season. The Grizzlies added talent through the draft over the next years with players like Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Antonio Daniels.

Despite drafting more talent in the way of Steve Francis, the Grizzlies continued to struggle as it seemed they could not hold onto their talent. Finally, after attendance had fluctuated, owner Michael Heisley decided to make a bid to move his team to Memphis. They beat out the Charlotte Hornets, who later moved to New Orleans, for the bid to play in this city and the move became official in 2001.

The Grizzlies organization underwent a massive facelift when they moved to Memphis as the front office as well as the players on the floor was completely changed. Former NBA great, Jerry West, was hired to be the GM and put together a team in 2004 that went to playoffs. This was the first time the Grizzlies made it to the post season in their history. They would make it to the playoffs the next two seasons and this time period would serve as the high water mark for this franchise.
