Indiana Pacers History

A team that had great success before officially joining the NBA was the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers were founded in 1967 as a part of the ABA basketball league set up to rival the NBA. They were the juggernaut team of the league winning a total of three championships. This was in part due to the play of former basketball greats like Jimmy Rayl, Mel Daniels, Bob Netolicky, and Roger Brown. However, the ABA would later be folded into the NBA and the team joined this league in 1976.

Their first 13 years in the NBA were marred by financial difficulty, which fostered lack luster talent on the court. The team almost went belly up due to stringent deals the NBA made with ABA teams to charge them $3.2 million to enter the NBA. Also, the Pacers could not share in television revenues for four years. This prompted the people of Indiana to show support for their team so it wouldn't be sold off and moved.

The 1990's was a time when the Pacers shined the most in the NBA with such talented players like Reggie Miller and Rick Smits. They would perennially make it to the playoffs but would always fall short of making the finals because of the tough play of the Eastern Conference. However, they would win their first trip to the big dance in 2000 but ultimately fell short of the championship falling to L.A. Lakers in six games.
