Charlotte Bobcats History

Charlotte, North Carolina lost its original basketball franchise when the Hornets moved to New Orleans in 2002. However, the NBA had promised the city of Charlotte that a replacement expansion team would be granted to them as soon as possible. This expansion team came when the Bobcats were created for the 2004-05 season. Robert Johnson got the bid to own the team and became one of the first prominent African American owners in major sports history.

This expansion team had its inaugural season in 2004 and lost its opening game against the Washington Wizards. Over the course of their first few seasons, the Bobcats mirrored most expansion teams by staying pretty close to the bottom of the standings. However, in the 2004draft they selected Emeka Okafor, who went on to became the Rookie of the Year. In 2006, former NBA great Michael Jordan bought into the Bobcats and became the head of basketball operations.

After Jordan came to this franchise, they experienced a small set back in 2007, despite having a formidable lineup for the first time. In 2008, Larry Brown, a Hall of Fame coach, was hired to turn this franchise around. They barely missed the playoffs that year falling short by four games. In 2009, the team was officially sold to Michael Jordan. After the takeover, the Bobcats clinched their first playoff berth in 2010.
