Atlanta Hawks History

The team that would later be known as the Atlanta Hawks was originally founded in 1946 in Buffalo and was called the Bisons. This team would move to Moline, Illinois just 12 games into their inaugural season and change their name to the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks would be one of the original members of the NBA in 1949 but fail to consistently win until the late 1950's.

Due to poor showings on the court and a lack of attendance, the team would move to Milwaukee in 1951, where the only significant thing that happened to them was that the name was changed to the Hawks. Once again, a poor gate caused this team to move again to St. Louis. The St. Louis Hawks would reach the NBA finals in 1957 and 1958 thanks to star player Bob Pettit. They defeated the Celtics in the 1958 championship, which is this franchises only title to date.

The poor showing of fans after the championship years led this team to finally settle in Atlanta in 1968, where they remain to this day. Since the move to Atlanta, the Hawks have not won an NBA title, but have had great talent on the team over the years with players like Dominique Wilkins. They have won four division titles since the move: 1970, 1980, 1987, and 1994.
