James Taylor History

James Taylor was born in 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts and raised in North Carolina. A big part of the folk revolution of the 60's and 70's, his music had a calm, acoustic sound which was much fitting to the times. Since the age of 16, James experimented in a number of bands, none of which had much success save for a signing with a very minor recording company. In an attempt to overcome his drug problem in 1968, he moved to London and became one of the first artists signed to the Beatles' record label, Apple Records. He released his debut solo album,James Taylor,in the UK that year.

When his album did not get much attention, he moved back to the States to finish rehab and eventually landed a deal with Warner Brothers Records. He released his second album,Sweet Baby James, in 1970, which proved to be a major success with thanks to the single "Fire and Rain." He then spawned another hit single, "Country Road," and his popularity was on the rise. His music career became consistent - he was, from that point on, releasing successful albums and recording plenty of hits. Many of his hits were his own versions of other songs.

By 2000, James Taylor had released a Greatest Hits album which had sold over ten million copies. He has since been welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters' Hall of Fame and released a second volume to his greatest hits. As of late, he has been quite successful in his tours, releasing an extremely popular CD/DVD set called Troubadour Reunion after his tour with Carole King in 2010.
