Iron Maiden History

The popular heavy metal band Iron Maiden was first formed on December 25, 1975 by bassist Steve Harris in London, England. The band changed forms many times over the next three years before finally settling on the lineup that would lead them to stardom. When Paul Di-Anno joined the band as lead vocalist in 1978, they recorded their first demo that led them to the top of UK Heavy Metal charts. They recorded popular hits such as "Transylvania" and "Sanctuary," which prompted them to open on a variety of rock concert tours with bands such as Judas Priest and KISS.

In 1981, the band removed Di'Anno from his position and hired Bruce Dickinson to take over as lead vocalist. The new member and the band jelled to produce "the Number of the Beast," which made it up to #1 on the UK Albums Charts. It was during this tour in the United States that the band experienced its first backlash as it was accused of satanic practices. The band went on to make more heavy metal albums as the early 1980's progressed, but in 1986 they decided to take their musical in a different direction.

This experimentation period saw the band feature a keyboard for the first time. This innovation was a successful move as their new album, "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son," reached number one on the UK rock charts yet again. Because of this, they were invited to the Monsters of Rock music festival in 1988 where they played to a capacity crowd of 107,000 fans. However, this would signify the end of the era as Bruce Dickinson would soon leave to pursue a solo carrer. They band would tryout many new vocalists before settling on Blaze Bayley in 1994.

Under Bayley, the band put out its lowest scoring album on the charts since 1981. Bayley would stay with the group until 1999 when Dickinson and Adrian Smith came back to the band. Since the turn of the millennium, Iron Maiden has been on many rock tours around the world, sometimes playing to crowds as large as 250,000 people. The band still tours today as fans of all ages cannot wait for the opportunity to hear them live.
