Blink 182 History

Blink 182 began when singer and bassist Mark Hoppus was introduced to singer and guitar player Tom DeLonge. Hoppus's sister knew that both of them wanted to start a band and thought that they might be a good team. They began playing and writing songs together in DeLonge's garage and, when they decided to start a real band, recruited drummer Scott Raynor, who they had met at a battle of the bands. The band called themselves Duck Tape before finally changing their name to Blink and, eventually, Blink 182.

After recording a few demos and a mildly successful independent record, the band finally recorded the album Dude Ranch in 1996. The album was distributed by MCA and marked the first mainstream success for the band, in large part due to the hit single "Dammit." They began touring with the new album but ran into trouble when drummer Scott Raynor developed a serious drinking problem. He was replaced by Travis Barker, who had been playing drums for Blink's supporting band, The Aquabats.

In 1998, Blink 182 went into the studio with their new drummer and recorded the album that would make them a household name, Enema of the State. They enjoyed years of success until 2005, when the stress of fame and constant touring began to wear on the members, especially DeLonge, and they decided to take an indefinite hiatus. However, when tragedy struck, the band realized how important their relationships were. Their longtime producer, Jerry Finn, died of a cerebral hemorrhage and, just a month later, Travis Barker was in a plane crash where he was one of only two survivors. At the 51st Grammy Awards, the band announced that they were getting back together.

When Blink 182 got back together, they decided to forgo immediately recording a new studio album and to instead reconnect with their fans through a nationwide tour. They hit the road with Fall Out Boy and Weezer as supporting acts. After the highly successful tour, the band went back into the studio to work on their first studio album in six years.
