Trivia
- Billy is known for his quirky sense of humor and once invented a fantastical story surrounding the name "The String Cheese Incident" on national television when interviewed by CNN the second year that they played (the mainstage a)t Telluride Bluegrass Festival.
- One (of many) of Billy's most endearing qualities is(was) the Group Hoot, in which he urges the audience to make as much noise as possible. The endearing part is that it was not in homage to the band, but for the communal experience of making a lot of noise with a big group.
- Billy first played electric guitar with the String Cheese Incident at Newport Folk Festival in honor of Bob Dylan. The move was largely seen as a reaction to the sense of losing control of the band, but most would agree that it honored neither his primary strength as a lyrical songwriter nor his secondary strength as a flat-picker. During the band's last shows at Red Rocks in 2007, someone gave Billy a hollow-body electric—a move that should have happened 4 years prior.
- It is always Billy's birthday in Telluride. The first weekend they headlined Town Park (not during the Telluride Bluegrass Festival), Billy's wife Jillian was brought to the stage in a giant cake to honor the tradition. There was a bottle of Patrón on stage as well. It is unclear whether Patrón or Jägermeister started the tradition.
Bill has been in attendance at center ice of the Xcel Energy Center for every Minnesota Wild game since their inception.
