The band met while in college at the University of Mobile. Mike Weaver had been serving as worship leader of a Pensacola, Florida church and attending community college in the area. He came to the university at the urging of his pastor, and studied voice. [1]

Several of the members of Big Daddy Weave homes were heavily damaged in Hurricane Ivan. The parents of Mike and Jay Weaver lost their home in Gulf Breeze, Florida that also included the offices for the band.
