Early life
Born into a wealthy family, Hadad had a dad who was in the oil business, and it was from his estate that she was able to raise capital for her later entrepreneurial escapades. Her first voyage into the world of business came when her dad entrusted her with the duty of selling the family donkey at market, when she was 15. Astrid, rid of her ass, was allowed to keep the money, however, ironically, she lost it after investing in the construction of an observatory, which was closed by the mayor for being 'unholy'.
The Ermine
In 1977, at the age of 30, Hadad's life had a radical change, when Hadad's dad had a bad fall and broke his head. He died in hospital, in intensive care. Despite making Hadad a tad sad, the tragedy had a
silver lining: it gave Hadad the inspiration and capital to become a full time entrepreneur.
With her newly acquired sum of money, Hadad had already started work on
The Ermine, a device designed to compete with the
computer mouse. The Ermine was identical in most respects to the mouse, except for the large picture of an ermine printed on the underside of the device. In fact, this similarity prompted one critic at the time to say that there was "jack sheet" reason to buy one. Hadad had been subject to numerous enquiries by the consumer watchdog, and by the time she was 35, production of The Ermine had ceased, after shifting only 786 units. Many analysts blame the high retail price of The Ermine for its eventual downfall.
Hadad and the internet
The Ermine has become somewhat of a
meme on internet forums, with users linking others to a picture of an ermine. This internet meme, informally known as Hadading, had an enormous impact on
11chan.
