The Seattle Seahawks were an expansion team to the NFL and were added to the league alongside the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976. Both teams were subject to an expansion draft in 1975 and the Seahawks were given the number two selection in the following year's NFL draft. The Seahawks would play their first game in the Kingdome that same year as pro football in Seattle was born.

The Seahawks are the first and only team to play in both the NFC and AFC conference championship game because they switched between leagues in 2002 with the realignment of the divisions brought on by the newly formed 32 team league.

In total, the Seahawks have accumulated six division titles and one conference championship. The Seahawks made their biggest headway as an organization when they went to playoffs an unprecedented five years in a row under head coach and general manager Mike Holmgren between 2003 and 2007. This time period included their only Super Bowl appearance in 2005, but ultimately fell short of the championship by losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-10.
