Other Philadelphia Teams
The city of Philadelphia is one of the greatest sports towns in the United States as it has representation all of the major sports leagues. Besides the Eagles, the city hosts the Flyers, the Phillies, and 76ers. The Flyers are a very popular team in this city and recently won the Eastern Conference in 2010, reaching the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1997. They look to take the Cup home in the following season with stars like Chris Pronger and Mike Richards leading the team.
Basketball also has a major following it this city as the 76ers have won the most championships for this town. However, due to the recent losing seasons, they are at the back of public opinion in Philadelphia. The Phillies are one of the most beloved teams in the city and have been on winning tear over the past four seasons. They won back to back National League Pennants in 2008 and 2009 and won their first World Championship since 1980 in 2008.

Going to an Eagles game is one of the greatest experiences that a football fan can ask for. Where else do fans boo as loud, throw snowballs at Santa, and taunt opposing fans as much as in Philadelphia. Eagles' fans are the rowdiest fans in the NFL and it is rumored that when they get cut on game day, green blood flows from their veins. However, if you are wearing an opposing teams jersey, you might want to think twice before entering "The Link."
Philadelphia Eagles History
In 1933, the Philadelphia Eagles became a professional football team alongside another Pennsylvania squad, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Eagles were added to the NFL as a way to keep the leagues integrity when the former Yellow Jackets folded up. The Eagles struggled over their first decade and due to man power shortages brought on by World War II, merged with the Steelers to become the "Steagles" during the war.
After the war, the Eagles saw their first period of success and dominance the National Football League. They were the only team to ever win back to back NFL championships by shutouts in 1948 and 1949. Hall of Fame running back Steve Van Buren led this team to these victories in both games. In 1960, the Eagles would win their last championship on the back of "Concrete Charlie" Chuck Bednarik and Tommy McDonald. This was the only team to beat Vince Lombardi's Packer teams during "playoff football."
After the 1960 season, the Eagles went into a twenty year dark period due to poor ownership, bad coaching, and abysmal drafting. It wasn't until the hiring of Dick Vermeil in 1976, that the Eagles would begin to turn their losing fortunes around. Over the next four seasons, the team would steadily improve to the point when they made their first Super Bowl during the 1980 season. Unfortunately for Eagles faithful, the Oakland Raiders were the better team that Sunday afternoon.
After this Super Bowl run, Vermeil resigned and the Eagles drifted back down the standings until the Buddy Ryan era of the late 1980's. He brought the 4-6 defense to Philly from Chicago and built what has to be considered one top-ranked defenses of all time. Some of the greats of this defense juggernaut are Eric Allen, Reggie White, Clyde Simmons, Seth Joyner, and Andre "Muddy" Waters. However, while dominating their division, the Eagles could not do anything once the second season started.
Poor coaching decisions and a Dallas dynasty plagued this organization during the 1990's as head coaches Rich Kotite and Ray Rhodes drove this team into the ground. However, before the 1999 season, the Eagles signed Andy Reid as the teams new head coach. One of his first and very unpopular moves was to draft Donovan McNabb. Little did anyone know at the time that he would become the face of the franchise and lead this team back to greatness.
These two, along with other high powered players like future Hall of Famer, Brian Dawkins, built this team into the class of the NFC East as they went on to dominate the division in the early part of the 2000's. They reached their second Super Bowl in 2004 but lost to the Patriots by 3 points. The Eagles continue to be one of the staples of the league, but will have to face the future without McNabb in 2010 as he was traded to division rival, the Washington Redskins. Kolb will not be the future of the franchise as the city's hopes and dreams of winning that ever elusive Super Bowl now rest on his shoulders.
