Other New York Teams
New York is about as big as it gets in sports. It has such a demand, in fact, that it is one of the few markets that has multiple teams in several different sports. They have two NFL teams in the Giants and the Jets. The town also has two hockey teams situated in or around the city with the Rangers and the Islanders. Both teams have struggled over the past few seasons but have long standing lineages in the NHL.
Basketball is the only sport in the city that stands alone as the city's sole representation. However, they have not represented the city well since Patrick Ewing retired as they have been perennially at the bottom of the standings. The Yankees and Mets are both in this city and both are premier teams in the MLB. The Yankees are the most revered sports franchise in pro sports history and recently won yet another World Series in 2010 against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets are the little brother to the Yankees but have won two titles of their own.
Get Giants Tickets!
Getting Giants tickets is a great idea for a number of reasons, especially this season because they are opening up a new stadium called New Meadowlands Stadiums. The Giants are always a competitive team and they play in arguably the toughest division in football, the NFC East. Watch great football action in a new state of the art facility when getting a pair of tickets to see the G-men.
New York Giants History
The New York Giants were established in 1925 and played their first game in Connecticut that same year. They posted a winning season their first season and, in two years, would win their first NFL championship posting an 11 win season in 1928. In 1930, the Giants were instrumental in solidifying the NFL as having better talent than the NCAA when the Giants shutout the four horsemen of Notre Dame.
It seems as the popular trend over the course of NFL history that the Giants would aid in making the league the legitimate best football league to watch in the country. The Giants would have success in the 1930's and 1940's, but it wasn't until the first overtime championship game in 1958 against the Baltimore Colts that football really started to catch on in the United States. Though the Giants would make it the championship game 4 times in the 50's, they would never win the title.
The 1960's and 1970's were down times for the Giants as they remained competitive but rarely made it the playoffs. This would change when they hired Bill Parcells as Head Coach in 1982. Parcells, with the help of players like Phil Simms and Lawrence Taylor, would lead the Giants to their first two Super Bowl championships in 1986 and 1990.
After the Parcells era ended, the Giants slid back down the standings in the 90's, partially due to the dynasty in rival Dallas. However, in 2000, the Giants would make it back to the Super Bowl but lose to the Ravens. In the 2007 Super Bowl, the Giants would rally late off an amazing catch by David Tyree to beat the undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
