Other New Orleans Teams
Besides the Saints, the only other major pro sports franchise located in New Orleans is the Hornets. The New Orleans Hornets are a member of the National Basketball Association and play in the Southwest division of the league. This franchise was moved to New Orleans from Charlotte, North Carolina in 2002. Since this move, the team has reconfigured itself around superstar point guard, Chris Paul. Paul is regarded as the best player at his position in the NBA today.
While the Saints and Hornets draw the most attention on the national level, there is still a variety of locations to watch sporting events in New Orleans. They have their own rugby team that has been around since 1976. New Orleans is also host to minor league baseball with their team the Zephyrs and have their own minor league soccer club called the Jesters. Sports enthusiasts also have the opportunity to watch Tulane University's sports teams to see amateur sporting competitions.

The Saints were always one of the laughing stock teams in the NFL until recent years. Now it is the Saints turn to do the laughing because not only are they a premier team in NFC South division, but they are the defending Super Bowl champions. Drew Brees and company are poised to defend their title at the Superdome in downtown New Orleans again this season so don't miss out on championship caliber football.
New Orleans Saints History
When 1966 rolled around, the NFL was expanding in an effort to phase out its competitor, the AFL. One team that was added to the NFL this year was the New Orleans Saints. They were added to the NFC West division and had two major happenings throughout their first thirty years of existence. They opened their first game with a kickoff return and kicker, Tom Dempsey, set the record for longest field goal which still stands today as 63 yards.
Besides these two major events, the Saints would be one of the bottom dwellers of the NFL for years to come. They didn't post their first winning record until 1987 when they went to the playoffs for the first time. Under head coach Jim Mora, the Saints enjoyed their best years from 1987 to 1993, making the playoffs four times in this time period. The Saints would make the playoffs again in 2000 but would have to wait until the Sean Payton era in 2006 to achieve their height of success.
When Sean Payton was hired as the head coach of the Saints in 2006, the Saints also brought in Drew Brees as its starting QB. The Payton and Brees combination would garner the Saints its first NFC championship game in 2006 and its first Super Bowl in the 2009 season. They would not only win the game, but dominate the favored Colts and prove to the world that championships in the NFL would not run through New Orleans.
