Other Dallas Teams
Dallas and the state of Texas is a location that is lucky enough to have sports teams in every one of the major sports. After Cowboys football, the team that holds the fans hearts in the local area is the Texas Rangers. This is a team that has been up and down over the years, but their ability to always have some of the best power hitters in the league has kept fans pouring through the gates for years.
Fans who are looking for other winter sports have both the Dallas Stars and the Dallas Mavericks to choose from. The Mavericks have bad boy owner Mark Cuban to thank for their rise to fame. He has approached ownership in much the same fashion as Jerry Jones and spares no expense to land the talent needed to get his team to the top. In the NHL, the Stars represent the city and do so proudly. Minnesota's loss (this franchise moved to Dallas in 1993) is truly this great states gain.

Attending a Cowboys game is not just seeing a football game, but seeing one of the greatest events in sports. Jerry Jones seems to live and die by the saying that "everything is bigger in Texas," and has created one of the greatest stadiums in the NFL. Fans are treated not only to great football when they attend a game, but have plenty of other venues to stay entertained. A trip to the Dallas/Arlington area would be incomplete without taking in a Cowboys game.
Dallas Cowboys History
The Cowboys made their first appearance in the NFL as an expansion team in 1960. The team was put together with retreads and unwanted players from other teams. Their opening season record of 0-11-1 well-represented this fact. It was a tough season for Coach Landry, but his persistence and demanding personality would soon payoff.
The starting QB for the original Cowboys was none other Eddie LeBaron. Patiently on the bench sat the future star of the team, Don Meredith. Meredith would never hoist the championship trophy, but he was an integral part in developing the teams personality that would later be portrayed in the movieNorth Dallas Fortyby Mac Davis.
After just a few short years, the Dallas players would start to buy into Coach Landry's system and the winning ways started. The 'Boys made their first playoff appearance in 1966 in what would mark an incredible run of making the playoffs 17 out of the next 19 years. In that span, they would play in five Super Bowls, winning two of them.
After the 1985 season, things started to fall apart for America's Team and it was time to rebuild. Landry's style of coaching no longer seemed effective and new owner, Jerry Jones, decided it was time to bring in fresh blood. His selection was the brash Jimmy Johnson, formerly the coach of the Miami Hurricanes. Jimmy's personality reminded many of the Meredith days and although they stumbled out of the gate in his first draft picks (Troy Aikman) inaugural season, it was only a matter of time before the glory days would return to Big D.
Aikman would go on to lead the Cowboys to three league titles in four years. While he may not have had the gaudy stats of the some of the games greats, he is easily considered one of the best QB's to ever play the game, as he sacrificed his own numbers to help the players around him excel. Anyone who saw Aikman play in his college days at UCLA knew what he was capable of, but with a surrounding cast of Smith, Irvin and Novacek, he had tools that few other QB's could boast at the time.
With Aikman's retirement so went the glory days of this franchise. However, since 2006, the Cowboys have once again started a rise to greatness and have teased fans with what they are capable of doing. Their quick exit in 2007 and horrific loss to the Eagles on the last day of the season in 2008 left a horrible taste in the mouths of Cowboy fans. The 2009 season brought the Cowboys their first playoff win since 1996 and fans are once again expecting a return to the Super Bowl in the very near future. Adding Dez Bryant in the 2010 draft means that the Cowboys will have one of the most dynamic offenses in the league for years to come.
