Boston Celtics History

The Boston Celtics are one of the marquee teams in NBA and have been since becoming one of its original members after the 1949 merger. It took this franchise eight years to build up its roster and coaching staff, but in 1957, Head Coach Red Auerbach built the team that included Bill Russell, Bill Cousy, and Tommy Heinsohm. This team would win its first of eleven championships that year. Bill Russell would later become the player/head coach of the team when Auerbach was promoted.

Once the 1960's ended, the Celtics took a step back and entered a slight rebuilding phase. Over the next decade they would win another two titles in 1974 and 1976 thanks to Dave Cowens and Paul Silas, but the next real dynasty would not occur until 1980's. This was brought about by drafting Larry Bird, a perennial NBA all-star, in 1979. Bird would lead the Celtics to five championships during the 1980's, bringing the dynasty back to Boston.

The 1990's and the 2000's saw this team go into a downturn, but the resurgence of this franchise would occur in 2005 as the team won its division for the first time in 12 years. Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett would be the core of this NBA team that went on to win the franchises 17th NBA title in 2008. They won the Eastern Conference in 2010, but ultimately lost the championship to the Los Angeles Lakers.
