After years of personal struggle, Billy Joel decided that it might be time to retire. In 1999, on New Year's Eve, he performed a show at Madison Square Garden that he said would be his last. He played for four hours, treating audiences to all of the greatest hits from his illustrious career. The performance was later released as the album 2000 Years: The Millennium Concert.

He began a series of tours with Elton John called the Face To Face tours in which the two piano men co-headlined.
