He continued performing after he moved to Los Angeles two years later. His 1998 appearance on Comedy Central's Premium Blend was his big break, and two years later, he landed his own half-hour special on Comedy Central Presents. Dane released his first CD/DVD set, Harmful if Swallowed, in 2003 and then signed with Comedy Central Records - this album is now certified platinum. His second album, Retaliation(2005), is now certified double platinum, and is responsible for Dane Cook being the first comedian to peak at #4 on the Billboard charts in 29 years. The same year as Retaliation's release, Dane Cook had his first HBO performance, Vicious Circle, and went on tour shortly after. Each of Cook's albums has peaked at least at #2 on the US Comedy charts.

Dane Cook is not only a stand-up comedian, but an actor as well. He has had a number of small movie roles since 1997, but his two most noteworthy roles are those in Mystery Men and Simon Sez. His role in the movie Waiting..., though comparatively nominal, has gained him fame in the movie world as well. Since then, he has had more major roles, including his role in Employee of the Month which debuted at #4, his starring role in Good Luck Chuck, and his role in Dan in Real Life alongside comedian Steve Carell. Cook continues to audition for roles in movies.
